Personal Rating 3/5

Sonic is to Sega, what Mario is to Nintendo. Sonic still lacked a lot of what Mario had to offer. This, the first Sonic game is a lot more bare than future Sonic games. The only functions you have is running forward, rolling into a ball up without the ability to shoot forward, and jump. Even for its time period, this game wasn't very innovative.

The release to the Xbox Live Arcade did in fact give it a couple new perks. The best thing is the save option. You can save the game in the pause menu at any time. An option it desperately needed in the Sega Genesis version. No longer will you play the first level over and over every time you turn on and off your console. Also, with the achievements, when you beat the game, you can now prove it. This also gives purpose to collecting the chaos emeralds.

The storyline is not really a conversation piece. There is no intro to this game, you just have to kind of know how to play it. You have 3 levels of several different zones. On the third level you go into combat with Dr. Eggman. Each time Dr. Eggman has a different machine, and a different strategy, which means you will have to figure out a new way to beat him each time. Why do you have to kill Dr. Eggman? Nobody knows. Why are you jumping on a capsule that releases small animals after each level? Nobody knows. The story of Sonic and Dr. Eggman doesn't explain itself in this game, and doesn't unfold until future games. But this isn't the first game that you go around mindlessly killing things, without any reason.

Sonic the Hedgehog is alternatively available on the Sega Genesis in the six pack cartridge; on the iphone and ipod; on the wii arcade; the gameboy advanced; and several other systems. I received this game free as a gift from Microsoft. I assume this game costs around 400 Microsoft points. In my opinion, it's not worth the buy. Xbox Live Arcade has a collection of Sonic games, including Sonic and Knuckles. If you enjoy Sonic games, I would suggest purchasing one of those first.

EDIT*
I recently found out that Sega released a disc that features 40 classic Sega Genesis games for the Xbox 360 (and ps3). It's called Sonic's UGC (Ultimate Genesis Collection). It has all the Sonic games that were on the S.G. plus 30 something other games. It costs 30 dollars at Gamestop, that comes out to 75 cent a game. If you are a Sonic fan, and Sega fan, I would highly recommend buying Sonic's UGC instead of this xbox live arcade download. I will save any further Sonic's UGC discussions for a different time.
