Mortal Kombat 3 was released to the xbox arcade in 2006, eleven years after it's original release to the arcade in 1995. Not much has been added to the game as far as game play and graphics. Actually, the only noticeable things are the main menu, and the online game play.
MK online is actually a very great thing. You can now kick some ones ass any time of the day from across the world. MK vs DC also goes online, as well as 1 or 2 ps2 MK games. MK vs DC still costs about 40-50 bucks, and the ps2 games, i think are shitty because of cheating on the ps2, and b.s. ps2 servers, which are possibly shut down by now. The great thing about MK3 is it only costs 400 microsoft points, and since it's xbox live, theres hardly any cheating, with only minimal lag. Online versus has ranked, and unranked matches. There's also a leader board if you're into that kind of thing.
The game play is still the same. 2d characters, in a 2d world, forward, back, jump, duck. If you've played Mortal Kombat 1 or 2, then you're not really missing anything. The Xbox 360 controller is similar to the SNES controllers button scheme, besides at least one big difference: the joystick. Using the controllers joystick isn't always as easy as using the d-pad, that's just how the game was made. But if you're good enough with your fingers you can pull off some really great combos, fatalities, babalities, animalities, friendships, pit fatalities, and not brutalities. MK3's diverse list of finishers isn't too common amoung MK games.
MK3 has all the characters you remember it having: Smoke, Cyrax, Noob, well you get the point. MK3 has 22 characters, which is a decent size roster, but somehow you still might seem to pick the same guy over, and over. Which means you'll be fighting the same guy over and over.
To sum it all up, MK3 can now be ten times more re-playable since it does go online. The game play hasn't changed any, but you might consider this version to be better since its installed to your xbox hdd. NO FREEZING, and you won't lose your cartridge. Although, I can't really argue the SNES is less reliable than the xbox 360.
If you're looking for a fighting game, and only have 400 microsoft points to spend, then I would recommend Mortal Kombat 3.
Don't you just miss fighting while cyrax is fucking the sand in the background.
